Take Control of Your Squirrel Problem!

Bird feeders are a huge main attraction for squirrels in residential neighborhoods and communities.  It may seem impossible, after hundreds of tries, to remove nuisance squirrels from your property and prevent them from eating and stealing your bird seed.  Fortunately, there are solutions to these squirrel foes.  Read on to learn ways to deter squirrels from destroying bird houses and stealing bird feed.

Squirrel Control

A person can use two common methods to prevent squirrels from stealing bird feed and making a huge mess under the bird house.  The first is to block squirrels from gaining access to the bird feeders.  The second method is to avert the squirrel or thwart them form wanting to get to the bird seed.

Squirrel Domes

To stop a squirrel from obtaining access to your bird houses, place the house in an area far from tree trucks and anything else they can use to climb and jump on.  At least 12 feet from any tree limbs, branches, poles, and play sets should do it.  If there isn’t an area in your yard that allows you to place your feeder at a distance that squirrels can’t get to, you can try modifying it instead.  To do this, you can purchase a device called a baffle, or squirrel dome, which attaches to the top of the feeder, or in other cases, is below the feeder.  It prevents squirrels from being able access the bird house altogether because it cannot get past the dome.

Squirrel Toys

There are more uncommon strategies that home owners implement to prevent squirrels from stealing all the bird seed.  For example, there are many commercial squirrel toys on the market, such as picnic table shaped squirrel feeders and spinning wheels.  Some people enjoy purchasing a feeder just for squirrels, and placing it three to four feet lower than the bird houses in a separate section of the yard.  This way, squirrels have their own feed and stay away from the bird seed, and also, it is very entertaining to watch the squirrels play and enjoy the food you give them.  Dried corn on the cob or shelled peanuts is great inexpensive feeds to supply for squirrels.

Squirrel Repellents

Another not-so-common method that is actually quite effective is a simple squirrel repellent spray.  You can find these sprays on the market anywhere and they are 100% safe for birds and squirrels.  The spray is to be used liberally on the bird feeders exterior, as well as, directly on the bird feed.  The spray doesn’t bother the birds at all, but is very distasteful to squirrels.  If it doesn’t taste good, they will stop coming back for more!
